It was an early interest in biochemistry and some connections in the winemaking industry that encouraged Wayne to enter the field of Winemaking. He was born and raised in the Barossa Valley of South Australia, where his parents grew grapes for a number of wineries in the region.
In 1974, Wayne entered Roseworthy Agricultural College and completed his Diploma in Oenology in 1976. Later that same year, Wayne joined LINDEMANS® as an Assistant Winemaker, at the Karadoc winery in northwestern Victoria. He is still based there; in fact, Wayne has spent 29 years as a winemaker with LINDEMANS®, and 25 of those years at the company's Karadoc winery. The facility is one of Australia's largest and most modern wineries, crushing and producing over 70,000 tonnes of fruit per year.
Today Wayne is the Winemaker Manager, leading a team of eight winemakers and responsible for many commercial wines. In addition to the LINDEMANS® Cawarra and Bin wines, he also oversees the production of Queen Adelaide, Kaiser Stuhl, Sparkling and the Little Penguin wines. The focus is on producing consistently great tasting wines for everyday enjoyment. The wines are fresh, soft, easy drinking and very affordable, value for money wines.
Wayne says "Commercial wines are harder to make than most wines because you have to be able to reliably produce a wine that is instantly recognisable year in year out, but there is no way Mother Nature gives you the same ingredients every year. Sourcing fruit from a wide area allows the freedom of blending to produce wines of consistency."
