South Australia's Coonawarra region is universally regarded as Australia's greatest red wine growing region. Situated 400km south east of Adelaide, this thin cigar-shaped strip of land, just 14km long and 2km wide, has been home to wine since the legendary Scottish pioneer John Riddoch first planted vines in the 1890s.
At the heart of the Coonawarra is the unique rich, red 'terra rossa' soil which lies over soft porous limestone and sits on top of a water table. As the vines struggle to extend their reach to the water, their growth is restricted and grape yield constrained, while the long ripening period slowly builds the intensity of the grape flavours.
It was the quest to create a range of ultra premium red wines that attracted LINDEMANS® to the Coonawarra and in 1965 the company purchased 120 acres of land that included the nursery vineyard - the very first vineyard planted by John Riddoch in the 1890s.
