LINDEMANS® was founded in the north eastern reaches of the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales in 1843 by Dr. Henry John Lindeman. Formerly a surgeon in the English Royal Navy before emigrating to Australia in 1840, Dr Lindeman purchased a property near the Paterson River and named it "Cawarra", an Aboriginal word meaning
"beside running water".
The first vines were planted in 1843 and a few years later a winery was established and full scale winemaking operations began. The winery flourished from the outset, resulting in a head office being established in Sydney. Following the death of Dr. Lindeman in 1882, the business was carried on by his three sons. At the turn of the century, the wine industry went into decline, forcing the restructuring of LINDEMANS® into a private company in 1906. At that time, it became important to consolidate and secure company owned vineyard resources.
