Senior Winemaker / Reserve & Coonawarra Trio Red Wines
What is your favourite moment for enjoying Lindeman's ?
I take the view that wine is made to be enjoyed and often people say "I'm waiting for a special occasion to drink this wine" - I respond with "drink the wine now and make the occasion special, why wait for it?". I like to turn a good wine with lasagne and a friend into a special moment where we discuss life's events and beyond. I find those moments the most memorable.
What is your favourite Lindeman's wine and why ?
My dearest wine is the 1976 vintage of Coonawarra Trio from Limestone Ridge. When this was consumed I was not a Winemaker, just the average guy with an interest in wine, it was the wine that made the occasion memorable because it was so good. Fortunately, vintage after vintage this wine is one of the best and continues to be a great wine and each time I have it my memories of that special occasion are refreshed. Timeless!
What does Henry Lindeman's quote "the one purpose of wine is to bring happiness" - mean to you ?
How true is this statement! I can't remember the number of times I have heard people say "I had a such and such a wine and it was fantastic and I wish I still had some now". In reply I always ask them "Why? You remember that wine so fondly, that is what wine is for, to enjoy and to create special occasions and to make those moments memorable - so in a way you still do have that wine now".
What is your favourite part of your job ?
The art of creation: turning grapes into wine and then seeing and hearing people say "what a wonderful wine this is". It is really important to me that people love the wines we produce, if I achieve that then I know I am living out Henry Lindeman's vision correctly - bringing happiness.
